Hair treatment: Protein treatment or Moisture treatment?
At some point in our adult lives ( i mean for women), we need to know what to do about our hair which has been misbehaving. You suddenly notice, your once so submissive hair begins to protest. Its so unmanageable and dull you start seeking solutions (dyes, more style enhancers, stronger relaxers, etc).
Then you find out about hair treatments methods: good job! you've come this far, now which one does my hair need?protein or moisture? I could just tell you right away that this is a pointless reason to worry; cos whether you need protein or moisture, you would have to do both anyway- but if i do, heyy! there'll be nothing to blog about! So humor me, let's blog a li'll.
I've come across different online articles where th authors attempt to help solve this puzzle, and most of them talk about the strand test for determining this. Two very popular tests are;
-the clarifying technique ( i gave it my own name), where u wash your hair with a known clarifying shampoo to get rid of all the chemicals and products you've been using. Then you cover the hair with a towel, and let it dry without using conditioners, leave-ins, detanglers, etc. if the hair is brittle and hard on drying, then you need Moisture treatment. If the hair is sticky and stretchy, then you need protein treatment.
- the strand -stretching technique, where you wet your hair thoroughly, then comb it or pull out a strand with your fingers. You try to stretch the strand to the point of maximum tension. If it stretches and then snaps back when you let go, then you need a protein treatment. However, if it breaks on trying to stretch it, then you need moisture treatment.
These methods all work. Bear in mind, observant people had to study to come up with this techniques. But here's the point. If you do protein treatment, you'll need to balance it with moisture afterwards. On the other hand, if you do a moisture treatment, you'll need a protein follow up afterwards.
Having noted that, we don't need a guru at this point to decipher the lesson to learn here; it would never be a mistake to establish a routine for BOTH protein and moisture treatments. I would say, do protein first, then do the moisture balance, but i'm sure you are entitled to your own view.
I just feel we should save our time and energy with regards to this issue, that's why i'm sharing. Your comments and views are welcome.
